This tuffted perennial sedge spreads from a short thick underground stem, forming dense swards of foliage and flowers from rigid upright stems. The flowerhead is upright and oblong in shape measuring 7-35 cm long. Along the branches are many densley clustered spikelets bearing 2-3 seed heads fringed with hairs. The flowers are red-brown in colour and occur from September to March. Basal leaves are roundish and flattened towards the tip, also broarder than stems, 1.5 to 7mm in diameter and often also longer than stems. Tends to grow shorter in dry ephemeral swamps and taller in permanent water. Usefull in permanantly moist areas, by a pond and water run-off areas. Moist to wet sandy, peat, clay loam areas, (low nutrients fine), in full sun to part shade. Often used as a transitional plant between high and low water levels.This plant is very suitable if you are encouraging frog habitation and is also a caterpillar food plant. Keept wet/moist in up to 500mm water in a sunny to part-shade position. Trim by half every 2-3 years if required, otherwise minimal maintenance required.
