SpecificationsBeetroot is a nutritious root crop vegetable belonging to the same family as spinach and chard meaning both the leaves and roots can be eaten. The leaves, which have a slight bitter taste are rich in calcium, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C and can be prepared and served in the same ways as spinach. The root is round, sweet and typically deep purple in colour. It is an excellent source of fibre, potassium and folic acid and although can be eaten raw in salads, sandwiches and wraps, it is typically eaten cooked or pickled. Requiring a position in full sun, Beetroot should be planted in well-drained soil that has been that has been enriched with compost or manure prior to planting and water regularly to ensure the soil stays moist. Adding mulch on top of your garden bed will help retain moisture in the soil. Plant Beetroot along side Onions, Silverbeet, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Cabbage and Dwarf Beans. Beetroot reaches maturity at 8-10weeks and should be planted 15cm apart.
