Avocado Bacon (B flowering) is the best cold-tolerant variety, showing a frost tolerance of minus 5 once established, and is a manageable size at 4m in height. This is a thin skinned variety with rich and creamy flesh and excellent flavor. With the ‘B’ type flowering varieties 1 tree will still produce enough fruit for the home garden in cooler climates, however in warmer climates planting a Haas as a second tree will ensure a good harvest. Unlike other varieties the Bacon fruit will fall from the tree once they are ripe. Avocado Bacon also has darker green foliage and a more upright growing habit, almost conical when young. All avocado trees will take a couple of years to establish and will look a bit 'ordinary' until then so don't think there is anything wrong. Avocado like well-drained soils and in some situations it would pay to plant on a slope or mound to ensure the don't have wet 'feet', but ensure they are kept moist as their root systems are not very vigorous and can dry out quickly, especially in the extreme temperatures we experience. Slow deep watering and mulching well can help with this as well. Apart from being amazingly tasty, avocados are very good for us – high in vitamin C, full of anti-oxidants, great for our skin and a good source of beneficial mono-unsaturated fats. They are a great liver cleanser and may also help prevent hair lose due to their high content of folic acid. Fertilize with blood and bone as well as a slow release fertilizer in the growing seasons.
